An IVD is any medical device — including reagents, reagent products, kits, instruments, equipment, or software — intended by the manufacturer for use in examining specimens derived from the human body for purposes such as disease diagnosis, monitoring of physiological conditions, or determination of safety or compatibility with potential recipients. This definition covers a wide range from simple lateral flow tests to complex automated analyser platforms.

Do IVD devices need clinical performance studies under IVDR?

Yes. IVDR requires manufacturers to demonstrate clinical performance — the ability of a device to yield clinically meaningful results — through clinical performance studies or scientific literature review. The extent of evidence required depends on classification: Class D (highest risk, e.g. blood group typing, HIV tests) requires the most rigorous evidence, while Class A devices have lighter requirements.

What is a Unique Device Identification (UDI) for IVD devices?

UDI is a series of numeric or alphanumeric characters created through a globally accepted device identification and coding standard that allows the unambiguous identification of a specific device on the market. Under IVDR, UDI labelling and registration in the EUDAMED database is mandatory and is being phased in by device class from 2023 onwards.
